About SuDs
Urban and peak rainfall runoff and waste water from land development sites, pose a risk of flooding and pollution. SuDS are designed to mitigate the risk by applying site control measures in the form of SWALES (shallow drainage channels), filter drainage systems, Storm Tanks or soak-aways. Storm Tanks are an innovative measure used to recycle run off water, where it can be stored, treated and safely returned to nearby water courses without any of the negative environmental impacts associated with polluted water. With effective management of excess surface water (acknowledged in the National Planning Policy Framework) a biodiverse environment is created that mimics natural land contours, allowing for water infiltration or evaporation. Creating a versatile, sustainable and environmentally enhancing drainage system is what we do best at SuDS For Wales.
Site control measures limit surface water runoff from large areas, like land development sites. SWALES (shallow drainage channels), and filter drains can channel run-off water to a site control measure, placed closest to the source. The accumulated run-off is managed further by regional control measures placed downstream of the source or site control measure. These systems, for example storm tanks, strategically placed, handle larger volumes of water. Operating on the same principles as the lower scale SuDS, they are connected by filter drains, ditches or leets, avoiding unsightly pipes. Designing a sustainable drainage system ensures that a number of essential components and steps are considered, known as the Treatment Train. Starting with prevention, reducing pollution and enabling water progression through the application of source controls, surface water ceases to be a problem, but a precious resource. Handled appropriately, surface water can result in a functional, biodiverse and natural environment that is cost effective and beneficial to everyone
